songs from the beginning of the world

by , in

The first part of my research based arts project "Chasing the Ghost of Angus Mcphee" a bespoke hand made and very limited edition grey cloth box containing a set of six new screenprints. The prints examine contemporary Scottish culture and its fractured relationship with the past through an exploration of identity which pulls together many diverse strands and influences such as outsider artist Angus McPhee in the grass woven costumes worn by the children as well as tribal fetishes and outsider art versions of everyday cultural icons that the children of the grass choose to worship.

This work provides a bridge between an ancient past and an unknown future for a hebridean culture and the broader Scottish culture. These tiny fragments are all we have left of our ancient Scottish nation and who we once were when we were culturally whole. Are the children ghosts from the past haunting our present or are they confused cultural warriors fighting to create a new future?

The ruins of old caravans, desolate vessels representing family and a transient relationship with memory and home lurk in the backgrounds of some of the images. In other more hopeful images we see new Ark structures built, Arks constructed from the debris of old boat hulls and deconstructed allotment sheds.

The texts reference political systems, ideologies, collective memories and calls for unity and are intentionally ambiguous, some ominous, some celebratory, some even threatening.

The background textures are an abstracted study of the orange lichens found by the coast in the Hebrides and explore both geology and mapping.

super8 sunshine

by , in

studio experiments with transfer printing and a mixed media approach combining spray paint and copper foils, these are studies for bigger pieces i'm creating. super8 sunshine refers to the caravans and the memories locked into them and it comes from short prose pieces i'm playing around with - hear follow said piece -

It was 1977 and punk was exploding but we didn’t care - we were in flares and huge pointy collars, you and mini me. We tubed in every day from the campsite, I was always really excited. My first ever McD’s and the cinema in Leicester Square: James Bond and Alistair McLean! Getting Lesley Crowthers autograph and seeing the Mousetrap on Drury Lane.

But you know what I remember most?

It’s you running.

I know that’s weird but I don’t think I ever saw you running before.

We were crossing the campsite and you said ‘lets go’ and were off before I could register what was happening. You seemed airborne and I had to run my absolute hardest, chest bursting, just to keep up. Everytime we came to a ditch you just vaulted it, never breaking stride. I was so scared but I just about kept pace, running flat out by your side.

My god we both flew so high that day. Higher than Icarus but we both made it down! You and me in the bright super8 sunshine. I’ll never forget that moment. It meant nothing really but I’ll never forget it.

I never ran that fast again.

child soldier tambourines

by , in

a new set of tambourines - they feel the right blend of childhood toy / marching beat / child soldier imagery and extend the idea of cultural brainwashing with the emphasis on learned behaviour in childhood - in this example of one the characters you can see the balance im trying to draw between the monoculture and the traditions of ancient scotland in the weaves of the garments inspired by angus mcphee - initially the work examines the child soldier - this being interesting as a child soldier is brainwashed to accept opposing cultural values to those taught by their "family" or heritage/culture - the weaves of angus begin to hold for me a power that matches these superbrand values - scottish child soldiers - adrift from their culture - searching for meaning - a lost generation
